Lung Cancer

Lung cancer begins in the cells of the lung. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can develop into and damage nearby tissue. It is the principal cause of cancer death in the United States. It kills more Americans each year than breast, prostate, and colon cancer joined. This cancer induced by asbestos is liable for an approximated 6,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.

Only a small percentage of cancer cases are primarily linked to asbestos. Tobacco smoking accounts for about 80% of lung cancer deaths in the United States. Exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer in smokers and non-smokers.

It is about twice as usual in men than in women. Squamous cell lung cancer, also called squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, accounts for about 30% of all lung cancers.
